Explore Custom Training TodayThis is not a license by itself. It is however required by all types of contractors. The State has created a trade exam for most licenses. When a trade exam is available, applicants must take both the trade exam and the Management Survey Exam. When there is no trade exam, the Management Survey exam is the only exam required in order to obtain that license. Each individual license’s information page will explain which tests are required.

Applicants must submit an application to the state licensing board to obtain approval before being eligible to take the exam(s). Part of the application process includes submitting to a background check.
A surety Bond is required. The minimum bond amount is $1000 and the maximum is $500,000.
Applicants must have at least 4 years experience within the last 10 years in the designation applying for.

The fee to apply is $300. If your license is approved the license fee is $600 for a 2-year license.
A license is issued for 2-years and must be renewed biennially.
Contractors engaged in any type of residential work must participate in the Residential Recovery Fund. The fee is based on the monetary limit placed on the license.
The testing company is PSI.
The exam is a multiple choice, open-book, timed test. There are 60 questions and a 2-hour time limit.
A minimum of 42 questions (70%) must be correct to pass the exam. You will receive your score immediately following the exam. The exam fee is $85 for one exam or $130 for one trade plus the Management Survey Exam.
Exam topics include Licensing, Estimating and Bidding, Lien Law & Financial Management, Tax Laws & Labor Laws, Project Management , Contracts, Risk Management, and Environmental and Safety questions.
