Documentation of at least 2 years and 4000 hours of practical experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.
A Residential Master Electrician is a person who possesses the training, experience, and knowledge to properly plan, layout, and supervise the wiring, installation, and repair of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes on residential projects where the voltage does not exceed 250 volts line to line and 125 volts to ground.

Limited reciprocal agreements exist with Arizona, California, Louisiana, Nevada and South Carolina. Reciprocity is limited to a waiver of the trade exam in a similar classification as long as applicant is in good standing.
Limited reciprocal agreements exist for Electrical Contractors with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming.
Applicants must complete 16 hrs of continuing education to renew their license. 8 hours must be on the current edition of the National Electrical Code.
The exam is administered by PSI. The exam is open-book, and is in three parts.
The Residential Master Electrician Theory exam has 50 multiple choice questions with 100 minutes to complete. 75% is required to pass. The exam topics inlcude: Voltage, Current, Resistance, Power and Voltage Drop
The Residential Master Electrician Code exam has 80 multiple choice questions with 180 minutes to complete. 75% is required to pass. The exam topics inlcude: Definitions & General Requirements, Raceways & Enclosures, Services, Feeders & Branch Circuits, Overcurrent Protection, Conductors & Cables, Grounding & Bonding, Lighting & General Use Equipment, Communications Systems, Pools, Photovoltaic & Wind, and State Laws & Rules
The Residential Master Electrician Practical exam has 6 questions with 60 minutes and is pass or fail. Candidates must bring the following items to the practical examination. • Two 5-foot pieces of ½-inch EMT conduit • One ½-inch EMT bender • One continuity tester or multi meter • One ½-inch conduit reamer • One straight blade screwdriver • One Phillips screwdriver • One pair of long nose pliers • One pair of side cut pliers • One pair of wire strippers • One hacksaw • One tape measure • One pencil or marker
