Virginia Gasfitter

There are three (3) classifications available, each with a Master and Journeyman Level:

Master/Journeyman Gas Fitter is a tradesman who does gas fitting related work. This work includes the installation, repair, improvement or removal of LP or Natural Gas piping, tanks, and appliances annexed to real property.

Master/Journeyman LP Gas Fitter is a tradesman whose work includes the installation, repair, improvement, alterations or removal of piping, LP gas tanks, and appliances. This does not include hot water heaters, boilers, and central heating systems that require a HVAC or Plumbing certificate.

Master/Journeyman Natural Gas Fitter is a tradesman who repairs, tests, or removes Natural Gas piping or fittings annexed to real property, excluding new installation of gas piping for hot water heaters, boilers, central heating systems, or other Natural Gas equipment that requires HVAC or Plumbing certification.

Additional Services

  • NOTICE: Effective February 1, 2008, all individuals applying for a tradesman’s license or individual certification must submit an application directly to the Board for Contractors (the Board) BEFORE taking any required examination. The examination vendor, PSI, will no longer permit you to sit for the exam unless you have received prior approval from the Board.
  • The Board will review the application and, if it determines an applicant is eligible to sit for the examination, notification will be sent to the applicant via regular mail with instructions concerning how to register with PSI and schedule the examination.
  • Once an applicant passes the examination, PSI will notify the Board and the license will be sent to the individual’s address of record.

    Journeyman Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Two (2) years of practical experience in the trade AND an Associate Degree or certificate of completion from a two-year program in the trade from an accredited community college or technical school; OR
  • Four (4) years of practical experience in the trade AND 240 hours of formal vocational training in the trade; OR
  • Five (5) years of practical experience in the trade and 160 hours of formal vocational training in the trade; OR
  • Six (6) years of practical experience in the trade AND 80 hours of formal vocational training in the trade; OR
  • Seven (7) years of practical experience in the trade AND 40 hours of formal vocational training in the trade; OR
  • Ten (10) years of practical experience in the trade, verified by an affidavit from those who observed the candidates work.

    Master Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • One (1) year of practical experience as a licensed Virginia Journeyman, OR
  • Ten (10) years of practical experience in the trade, verified by an affidavit from those who observed the work.
  • To become an Gasfitter Contractor, you must add the Class A or Class B to Master Gasfitter license.

Licensing Fees for both Master and Journeyman Gasfitter Classifications are $90.00

Licenses belong to the business.  A person can take the exam and pass and qualify his or her business.  If they purchase a second business, they do not have to test, but they must submit a new application for the new business.

Virginia has no reciprocity agreements in place for any of its Gasfitter Classifications.

Virginia requires Gasfitters to complete at least 3 hours of continuing education from a provider that has been approved by the Board. This must be done before a license can be renewed.

  • NOTE: All Candidates are required to pass the Statutory and Regulatory portion and the Technical portion of the examination for the specific license or certification for which they are applying.

    Effective immediately, a candidate who passed both the Statutory/Regulatory portion and Technical portion of the exam to become a licensed Journeyman need only take the Technical portion of the Master's exam when applying for an upgrade to the Master's license.

      Testing is administered by PSI.

  • Journeyman/Master Gasfitter portion is 50 questions, 150 minutes time limit, and 35/37 respectively correct for a passing score.

    The exam contents for this portion include: Natural and LP Gas Piping, Pipe Sizing, LP-Gas Tanks, Gas Piping Controls and Testing.

  • Journeyman/Master LP Gasfitter portion, 50 questions, you will have 150 minutes to complete and you will need to get 35 correct answers for a passing score for Journeyman and 37 correct for Master.

    The exam contents for this portion include: Natural and LP Gas Piping, Pipe Sizing, LP-Gas Tanks, Gas Piping Controls and Testing.

  • Journeyman/Master Natural Gasfitter portion 50 questions, you will have 150 minutes to complete and you will need to get 35/37 correct  respectively for a passing score .

The exam contents for this portion include: Natural and LP Gas Piping, Pipe Sizing, Gas Piping Controls and Testing.
