- Pre-Approval from the state is required.
- Individuals must hold a Journeyman Plumber license before eligible to sit for the Master Plumber exam.
- To qualify for the Journeyman Plumber classification, the applicant must have at least five years or 8,000 hours of full-time experience in the plumbing trade. The application is required to be signed by three (3) currently licensed Journeyman or Master Plumbers who can attest to the experience.
- To qualify for the Master Pumber classification, the applicant must hold a current Journeyman Plumber License or a current restricted Master Plumber License or a LA Professional Engineers License with 5 years experience in the plumbing trade.
- Master Plumbers are required to carry general liability insurance, vehicle liability insurance on service vehicles and Worker's Compensation insurance if they have employees. Licenses cannot be issued without proof of insurance.

Louisiana states that if an individual holds a license in any other state for a classification that required a trade exam to be passed, LA will accept that exam for reciprocity for whatever classification LSLBC deems to be equivalent.
Journeyman Plumbers are required to complete 4 hours of Louisiana State Approved Continuing Education prior to renewal.
Master Plumbers are required to complete 6 hours of Louisiana State Approved Continuing Education prior to renewal.
- The fee for the Journeyman Plumber exam is $125.
- The exam has 80 questions, is multiple-choice, and a time limit of 180 minutes.
- A 70% is required to pass.
Topics on the exam include administrative licensing, permits and inspections, general knowledge and regulations, water heaters, fixtures, drainages systems, cleanouts, vents and venting, traps and interceptors, materials and hangers, Isometric Analysis, piping, valves and more.
- The fee for the Master Plumber exam is $100.
- The exam has 3 parts, is multiple-choice and timed, and requires a 70% to pass.

Part 1 consists of 80 questions pertaining to General Plumbing Knowledge.

Part 2 consists of 25 questions pertaining to Practical Plumbing Knowledge.

Part 3 consists of 40 questions pertaining to Business and Law Knowledge.
Topics on the exam include drainage systems and sewers, water supply and backflow prevention, general code, materials and installation practices, excavation, fixtures and trim, inspection and testing, safety, terminology, plans and specifications, Isometric and plan drawings, layout project management, risk and financial management, planning, organization and licensing, labor laws, tax laws and more.
American Contractors currently does not offer a seminar to prepare for the Louisiana Master Plumber exam.
