Contractors License Overview
- Plumbers are the only contractors that must be licensed at the state level in Indiana. Any other licensing/registration for construction work is generally done on the city or county level.
- To be an apprentice plumber, you must be 17 years old or older and registered in an approved apprenticeship program.
- To qualify to become a journeyman plumber, you must have at least 4 years in an apprenticeship program or be a licensed plumber in another state.
- To qualify to become a plumbing contractor, you must have at least 4 years in an apprenticeship program, be a licensed plumber in another state, or have 4 years in the plumbing business under a licensed plumbing contractor.
- After journeyman and contractor applicants submit an application, they will have to pass an exam administered by Prov.

Indiana Plumbing Contractors: Trade examinations are required for Plumbing licenses. The exams are given by Prov Inc.
Four years of verifiable experience are also required. All members of a firm, co-partnership, or an association must be individually licensed.
Insurance is required and Recovery fund fees are $75.00.
License expires every two years and is renewed biennially.
The examination application processing time is approximately three months.
