Contractors License Overview
- Massachusetts requires a Construction Supervisor license to oversee construction of 1- and 2-family homes of any size, work on existing homes for 1- to 4-families, and construction of buildings less than 35,000 cubic feet. For buildings greater than 35,000 cubic feet, a registered architect or engineer must control construction, so no state contractors license is required.
- A Home Improvement Contractor registration is also required to do work on existing 1- to 4-family homes. No exam is required.
- Plumbers, gas fitters, electricians, and refrigeration technicians are regulated on the state level and must be licensed.
- Applicants for a Construction Supervisor, Plumbing, Gas Fitting, Electrical, or Refrigeration license must submit an application for approval before taking their required exam.
