Contractors License Overview

  • North Dakota regulates all contractors doing work where the total cost, value, or price of the job exceeds $4,000. This basic license is obtained from the ND Secretary of State and does not require an exam. However, some trades, such as electrical and plumbing, require additional licenses or registrations.
  • Electricians must apply with the ND State Electrical Board and then pass an exam to become a licensed Master or Class B electrician. Additional paperwork and orientation is then required to become an Electrical Contractor (to do jobs over $4,000).
  • Plumbers must apply with the ND State Plumbing Board and then pass an exam to become licensed for plumbing, sewer and water, or water conditioning.
  • Information regarding exam details, reference materials, experience requirements, reciprocity, and other requirements for obtaining and maintaining a license are available by selecting the license links found below.
