Master Electrician shall mean a person, licensed by the Board, to plan, estimate, layout, perform or supervise the installation, erection or repair of any electrical conductor, duct, raceway, conduit, machinery, apparatus, device or fixture for the purpose of lighting, heating or power in any structure.

To become a master electrician in Delaware, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Experience: Have at least six years of full-time experience under a licensed master electrician. Alternatively, you can have four years of full-time experience and two years of technical training.
  • Education: Complete 576 hours of Board-approved training.
  • Exam: Pass the Delaware master electrician exam with a minimum score of 75%.
  • Insurance: Have a minimum of $300,000 in general liability coverage.
  • Application: Complete an application and pay the $172 application fee. 
  • Licenses: Provide copies of any other licenses you have. 
  • Renewal: Renew your license every two years and complete the required continuing education.

Delaware has reciprocity agreements with several states for Electrical licenses, but the requirements vary by state. Michigan and Wyoming have reciprocity however for others,contact the Licensing Board for more information

For full licensure renewal periods between July 1 and June 30 even-numbered years (2022-2024, etc.):

  • Active Master, Master Special, Limited and Limited Special Electrician’s must complete 10 hours of approved CE. Beginning with your second renewal, 5 of the 10 CE hours must be related to the National Electric Code.
  • Active Journeypersons, Residential and Apprentice Electrician’s must complete 5 hours of approved CE.

The Master Electrician exam is adaministered by PROV

The cost of the exam is $100. The exam is 80 questions, open-book, with a 3 hr time limit. All electrical exams require a 75% to pass.
