The associated references listed below were used to create the exam and individuals should be familiar with them, however only the Nation Electrical Code may be used during the exam and PSI furnishes it for test takers.

You are not allowed to register for your exam until the Board approves your application and sends you a letter of approval. The Board’s application forms can be found online at www.cca.hawaii.gov/pvl
Your eligibility is valid for 6 months. You can test unlimited during the 6-month period.
Submit completed and notarized forms "Experience Verification - Electrician Only under whom you received your experience/training.
Electricians: Act 35, SLH 2010 requires all journey worker and maintenance electricians to provide verification of completion of electrical academic coursework conducted at or accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College.
EJ- Journey Worker- 5 years but not less than 10,000 hours in residential or commercial wiring and satisfactory completion, accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study, of 240 hours of electrical academic coursework.
ES- Supervising Electrician- 4-years experience as a licensed journey worker electrician or equivalent.
EJI- Journey Worker Industrial Electrician - 4 years but not less than 8,000 hours in industrial electrical work and satisfactory completion, accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study, of 200 hours of electrical academic coursework.
ESI- Supervising Industrial Electrician - 3 years experience as a licensed journey worker industrial electrician or equivalent
EJS – Journey Worker Specialty Electrician- 3 years but not less than 6,000 hours in the trade and satisfactory completion, accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study, of 120 hours of electrical academic coursework
ESS – Supervising Specialty Electrician - 2 years experience as a licensed journey worker specialty electrician or equivalent.
EM – Maintenance Electrician - 1 year of electrical maintenance work and satisfactory completion, accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study, of 80 hours of electrical academic coursework or 2 years of schooling in the trade with not less than 1,000 hours of hands-on lab exercises.
To place, install, erect, or connect any electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, electrical signs, conduits, poles, raceways, and to do trenching, backfilling, patching, and surface restoration in connection with the installation of conduit and lines that transmit, transform, or utilize electrical energy less than 600 volts phase to phase. This classification also includes the work of the C-15 Electronic Systems Contractor and C-60 Solar Power Systems Contractor.

Hawaii does not reciprocate its Electrical Classification with any other state. All applicants must meet the same licensing and examination requirements.
All electricians in the state of Hawaii are required to complete 4-hours of continuing education every 3-years in order to renew their electrical license. Renewal years match the NEC revision cycle. (ex: 2017, 2020, 2023)
Exam is administered by PSI and pre-approval is required.
The C-13 Electrical Contractor exam has 40 questions, a 2-hour time limit and a 75% required to pass.
The 2020 NEC is provided in the testing center for your use during the exam. The other references are not allowed.
