The associated list of references have been used to create exam questions but are NOT ALLOWED into the testing center. We no longer carry the 2003 International Building Code however the 2006 edition is available Individuals testing should be familiar with the information contained in these references.

The Business Law exam is also required, in addition to the General Building exam.
Applications for licensure must be submitted to the Board by the 20th of the month for review by the Board during the following month. (The Board does not review applications or meet in December)
Once the application is approved, the qualifying individual or responsible managing employee must successfully complete the appropriate licensing examinations.
Upon completion of the exam process, the applicant must submit license fees, and proof of liability and workers compensation insurance.
Four-years of supervisory experience, within the last ten years, are required.
Prior to licensure, applicants must submit a certificate of insurance for worker's compensation and a certificate of insurance from their insurer showing liability coverage in the following amounts:
Property Damage = $50,000 per occurrence
Bodily Injury = $100,000 per person/$300,000 per occurrence
This exam covers a broad range of activities performed by a General Contractor. Examination questions are based on research of accepted business and trade practices as determined by surveyed current professionals in the field of General Building.
Every aspect of commercial, residential and public works construction is regulated at the state level.

Hawaii does not have reciprocity agreements with any other states.
Currently, Hawaii does not require continuing Education for its contractors.
This exam is Closed-Book with 80 questions and a 4-hour time limit.
Passing score of 75% is required.
The Business and Law examination is also required.
Exam questions include topics: Plan Reading and Estimating, Sitework and Concrete, Masonry and Carpentry, Metals, Thermal and Moisture Protection, Doors and Windows, Finishes, Safety
The exam fees are $65 per portion, with most classifications requiring 2 portions, one of which is Business Law.
