The installation of boilers including all related fittings, piping, valves, gauges, pumps, radiators, convectors, tanks and lines for fuel oil, chimneys, flues, insulation and other appurtenances, the fabrication and installation of all systems of sprinklers for protection from fire, including the appurtenances, the insulation of pipes and ducts to reduce the loss of heat, the creation and maintenance of a permanent means for a supply of pure and wholesome water, ample in volume and of suitable temperatures, for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing and cleaning, for the cleansing of waste receptacles, and the speedy and complete removal of all fluid and semi-fluid organic wastes and other impurities, as appropriate for the occupation of any premises;


The creation and maintenance of a permanent means to supply gas for residential and industrial purposes, the selection, cutting, shaping, fabrication and installation of sheet metal in such forms as cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, downspouts for rainwater, pans, kitchen equipment, ducts, louvers, patented chimneys and metal flues, the fabrication and installation of systems for the heating, evaporative cooling and circulation of air, excluding cooling systems which require refrigeration as an integral part of the system, the installation of all types of systems for the complete artificial watering or irrigation of gardens, lawns, shrubs, vines, bushes, trees and other decorative vegetation, including any related excavating and backfilling, the installation of pipes from the source of supply of liquefied petroleum and natural gas into a building or structure and the installation of the related vents, the installation, replacement and repair of water heaters, including the connection to existing lines for potable water and gas, the necessary venting and other incidental connections, the installation, replacement and repair of systems for the collection of solar energy to heat potable water, swimming pools and spas, and air which is used to heat structures which house persons, animals or inanimate objects, the fabrication, installation, repair and removal of pipes, pumps, valves and other equipment used in the transfer of chilled water for the control of temperature.

This license allows work in all the subclassifications that fall under it, which include: Boilers (C-1a), Fire Sprinklers (C-1b), Insulation of Pipes and Ducts (C-1c), Plumbing (C-1d), Sheet Metal (C-1e), Heating, Cooling and Circulating Air (C-1f), Landscape Irrigation (C-1g), Pipes and Vents for Gas (C-1h), Water Heaters (C-1i), Solar Water and Space Heating (C-1j), and Chilled Water Piping (C-1k)

Required Books 

The references listed were used to create the exam questions and are recommended for study. This exam is semi-open book.

Only the 2012 Uniform Plumbing Code, 2012 Uniform Mechanical Code, NFPA 13, NFPA 54 & NFPA 58 are allowed into the exam. Prospective contactors should be familiar with the information contained in all listed reference materials.

Applicants must submit an application to the state licensing board to obtain approval before being eligible to take the exam.

Applicants are required to pass both the trade exam and the Management Survey Exam (Business and Law Exam) in order to obtain a license

Applicants must document a minimum of four (4) years of experience within the past 10 years. This experience must be as a Journeyman, foreman, supervising employee or contractor. Education may be used to satisfy a portion of the required experience. Applicants must also submit 4 reference certificates concerning their work experience and submit to a background check.

All applicants must submit current financial statements to the state licensing board. Monetary limits are set based on financial standing. If seeking a financial limit less than $1,000,000 the statement must be compiled, reviewed or audited by a CPA, self-prepared on a form provided by the Board, or using accounting software and accompanied by an affidavit. When seeking a monetary limit of $1,000,000 or more, the financial statement must be reviewed and audited by a CPA.

There is no reciprocity for the plumbing and electrical trades

PSI administers the exam.

The exam is semi open-book, has  120 questions and a 5 hour time limit. A score of at least 70% (32 correct) is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $95 for a single exam and $140 for one trade exam plus the Contractor Management Survey Exam.

If the test is failed three times the applicant must begin the application process over and reapply directly to the Nevada State Contractors’ Board.

Exam content includes Boilers, Gas Systems, Cleanouts, Fixtures and Equipment, Hydronics, Water Heaters/Venting, Piping, Valves, and Controls, Sheet Metal, Water Supply, Hangers and Supports, Drain, Waste, and Vents, Backflow, Traps and Interceptors, Isometric Analysis/Plumbing Mathematics, Safety, Joints and Connections, Solar, General Plumbing Requirements, Fire Sprinklers, Storm Drainage, Industrial Piping, Breathing Systems for Firefighters, and Chilled Water Piping.
