The South Carolina Concrete license covers all work in connection with concrete forming and placing; assembling of forms, molds, slipforms and pans; centering, trenching, excavating, backfill, and grading in connection with concrete construction; construction of sidewalks, driveways, curbs, medians, and barrier walls; and installing of embedded items essential to or comprising an integral part of concrete or concrete construction including reinforcing elements and accessories including, but not limited to, concrete chimneys, floors, piers, and foundations when using concrete rebar and other materials common to the concrete industry. This license does not include the General Contractor-Highway- Bridge license or the construction of streets, roads, parking lots, and highways.

Please note that the South Carolina Business and Law exam as well as the South Carolina Concrete exam is required to be passed to obtain your contractors license.

Financial requirements:

All licenses that fall under the category of General Contractor are divided in five financial categories based on net worth:

  • Group 1 – Allows for jobs of $100,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth/total equity of at least $20,000 and working capital of $10,000
  • Group 2 – Allows for jobs of $400,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $60,000 and working capital of $40,000
  • Group 3 – Allows for jobs of $1,000,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled or reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $150,000 and working capital of $100,000
  • Group 4 – Allows for jobs of $3,000,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled or reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $250,000 and working capital of $175,000
  • Group 5 – Is Unlimited on the size of job allowed, applicants must submit an audited financial statement that has been prepared by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $350,000 and working capital of $250,000. 

    Experience required:

  • Within the past five years, contractor must show two years of actual work experience as a full-time employee in the desired classification. Only commercial experience is accepted.

 The first step in the licensing process is to pass the exams.

A completed application will then be submitted to the state licensing board with documentation of your experience, financial information and your passing test scores.

    South Carolina currently has a reciprocity agreement with Utah for this license.

    There are currently no continuing education requirements for this license.

    • The South Carolina Concrete exam is administered by PSI.
    • The fee for the exam is $75 and in order to pass you must answer 35 correctly.
    • The Concrete exam is an open-book exam with 50 questions to complete in 3 hours.
    • The trade exam may only be taken twice in a 12-month period, and thereafter only once in six months.

      Topics on the exam include safety; concrete-earthwork; concrete; concrete-reinforcement; concrete-formwork.

    American Contractors does not currently offer a seminar for the Concrete exam. We offer the approved reference materials for the South Carolina Concrete examination.
