Please note that the South Carolina Business and Law exam as well as the South Carolina Fire Alarm exam is required to be passed to obtain your contractors license.

Financial requirements:

All licenses that fall under the category of General Contractor are divided in five financial categories based on net worth:

  • Group 1 – Allows for jobs of $50,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $10,000.
  • Group 2 – Allows for jobs of $200,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $40,000.
  • Group 3 – Allows for jobs of $500,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled or reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $100,000.
  • Group 4 – Allows for jobs of $1,500,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled or reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $175,000.
  • Group 5 – There are no financial limits on the size of job allowed, applicants must submit an audited financial statement that has been prepared by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $250,000.

    Experience required:

  • Within the past five years, contractor must show two years of actual work experience as a full-time employee in the desired classification. Only commercial experience is accepted.
  • Fire Alarm Contractors are also required to pass the Level II Certification for Fire Alarms from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). Information about Level II Fire Alarm Certification may be obtained from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) at one 1-888-IS-NICET or www.nicet.org
  • i>Applicant must submit a criminal background check of the entity's principal officers, all qualifying parties, and registered employees./i> The background check must indicate that these individuals are at least eighteen years of age and have not been convicted of any criminal act or committed any acts which are grounds for the denial of a license under this chapter.

The South Carolina Burglar Alarms license covers individuals that design, install, service, maintain, or alter fire alarm systems.

The first step in the licensing process is to pass the exams.

A completed application will then be submitted to the state licensing board with documentation of your experience, financial information and your passing test scores.

South Carolina currently has no reciprocity agreements for this license.

There are currently no continuing education requirements for this license.

  • The South Carolina Fire Alarm exam is administered by PSI.
  • The fee for the exam is $60 and in order to pass you must answer 35 correctly.
  • The Fire Alarm exam is an open-book exam with 50 questions to complete in 3 hours.
  • The trade exam may only be taken twice in a 12-month period, and thereafter only once in six months.

    Topics on the exam include general electrical knowledge; low voltage; fire detection and alarm systems.
