Required Books 

Examinees may bring the following items to the examination:

  • References must be Bound (either original bound book, three-ring binder, or stapled). Photocopies of copyrighted materials are not allowed.
  • Have notes written in ink or highlighted in code sections only(South Dakota Only) 
  • Have permanently attached tabs (tabs that can’t be removed without destroying the page).
  • Architects’ scale or rule

  • Pre-Approval is required. No Business and Law exam is required.
  • After completing four years (for a total of 8,000 hours) as an apprentice working under an electrical contractor, you will be ready to write the journeyman's exam.

    It will then take another two years as a journeyman (with a total of 4,000 hours of additional work under a contractor, including a minimum of 2,000 hours of commercial work) to write the electrical contractor's exam.

    If you are working in South Dakota, you must be registered or be licensed in order for your working time to count toward the hours required to take the exams.

    Anyone who holds a license or registration with the State of South Dakota must have the required continuing education hours in order to renew his or her license or registration.

There is some reciprocity for Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming

Anyone who holds a license or registration with the State of South Dakota must have the required continuing education hours in order to renew his or her license or registration.

Continuing Education 16 hours of continuing education is required for license renewal on every even year. 8 hours must be code related. The other remaining 8 hours may be non-code

531 South Dakota Journeyman Electrician is 80 multiple-choice questions. The Exam fee: $110(CBT) Open book—4-hour time limit, 70% to pass

533 South Dakota Class B Electrician is 60 multiple-choice questions . The Exam fee: $110 (CBT) Open book—3-hour time limit, 70% to pass

534 South Dakota Electrical Inspector is 100 multiple-choice questions. Requires a score of 80 to pass Exam fee: $110(CBT) Open book—5-hour time limit.
