Texas Journeyman Electrician

The Texas Journeyman Electrician license allows the license holder to work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician, on behalf of an electrical contractor, or employing governmental entity while performing electrical work. Electrical work is defined as any labor or material used in installing, maintaining, or extending an electrical wiring system and the apparatus or equipment used in connection with the use of electrical energy in, on, outside, or attached to a building, residence, structure, property, or premises, including service entrance conductors as defined by the National Electrical Code.

Additional Services

  • Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the exam.
  • The state requires applicants to have at least 8,000 (4 years) hours of on the job training under the supervision of a master electrician and pass the journeyman exam.
  • There are no state minimum financial requirements at this time.
  • Applicants with any criminal offense conviction (felony or misdemeanor) must complete a criminal history questionnaire.

Applications are processed in the order in which they are received. The wait time is typically no more than 2-3 weeks.

Texas has a reciprocal agreement for this license with Arkansas and Washington.

The Texas Department of Licensing requires completion of 4 hours of approved continuing education during the term of the current license. The required hours must cover the National Electrical Code and Texas state electrician laws and rules. For late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the 1 year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.

  • Applicants must obtain pre-approval from the TDLR before testing.
  • The Journeyman Electrician exam is administered by PSI. The exam is 80 questions and a 4 hour times limit. (There are 5 additional non -cored items with a 20 minute time limit)
  • 70% is required to pass. Cost of the exam is $78.00
